Upwork proposal template
A short, client-first Upwork proposal that opens with a specific detail from the post, shows one relevant proof, and ends with a low-pressure question.
When to use this
Send this when you're answering an Upwork job post and you've read the whole brief. If the post is vague or the budget is a joke, don't bother — no proposal rescues a bad fit, and your connects are better spent elsewhere.
Why it works
Clients on Upwork skim the first two lines and decide fast. The generic "Hi, I'm a hard-working freelancer with 5 years of experience" open gets buried under forty other identical ones. This one opens with proof you actually read their post, tags one relevant result, and ends with a real question instead of a pitch.
How to customize
- Replace
[specific detail]with something real from the post: a tool they mentioned, a constraint, the actual goal. If you can't find one, keep reading the post. - Replace
[one relevant outcome]with a number or a delivered thing. "I have 5 years experience" is not a result. - Keep it under 150 words. Every sentence you can cut makes the rest stronger.
- Never copy their job post back at them. They wrote it; they know what it says.
The template
Hi [Client first name if visible, otherwise skip the greeting line entirely], Noticed you mentioned [specific detail from the job post] — that's usually the part that determines whether a project like this ships on time or drags for weeks. I've done this exact kind of work [X times / for Y type of client]. On my last one, [one relevant outcome in a single sentence — a number, a timeline, or a concrete deliverable]. A quick question before I scope this properly: [one clarifying question that only someone who understands the job would ask]. Happy to share [a short Loom / two sample links / a past deliverable] once I understand the context a bit better. — [Your first name]
Replace anything in [brackets] before sending. This template is provided as-is, free to use.
